Data Agreement

To access our data, in addition to registering for a UAS account, please submit a Tier 1 data user agreement (DUA). This allows access to survey data and public use data products. For access to Tier 2 (Sensitive Data) or Tier 3 (Restricted Data), described below, a separate Data User Agreement is required.

Accounts are provided to those who have a legitimate research purpose. Your account, once granted, will provide access to UAS data associated with surveys that are not currently under embargo. You may not share this data with colleagues, co-authors, or collaborators unless they too have created a UAS data access account.

We strive to respond to your request within 3 business days. Incomplete DUAs, or failure of students to provide advisor contact information and signatures will engender delays. We will request verification from student advisors before granting student accounts.

Data files available for download in this tier include survey responses, state location indicators (county is known for the LABarometer panel comprising members of Los Angeles County in California); demographic variables; household information.

If you have not done so already, create an account by filling out the registration form. After that, fill out and submit a data user agreement (editable PDF, basic PDF here) to uas-l@usc.edu:

  • Fill out the DUA completely, including all required fields.
  • Use your official affiliation email address, rather than gmail or some other generic email address.
  • Students, interns and other non-employees of affiliated institutions: provide contact information and signature from an advisor, professor or mentor at your university / institution who is willing to sign to guarantee safe data handling.
  • Keep your DUA and refer to it for how to credit the use of UAS data in publications, presentations, articles, and stories. Other acknowledgements may apply to certain data sets such as Covid-19 tracking data, which is partially funded by grants.

Data files available for download in this tier include coded UAS survey data and data products from election tracking, or survey data linked to external data at other than state level by UAS staff and provided for research use. Data files may include additional “blinded” location indicators (i.e., index numbers replacing geocodes used for linking UAS data to external data) but no geocodes. External data linked to UAS data must not include indirect identifiers (i.e., external data uniquely associated with locations more granular than state, which could be used to re-identify the location).

Fill out and submit a data user agreement (editable PDF, basic PDF here) plus the Sensitive Data User Agreement to uas-l@usc.edu:

  • Fill out the DUAs completely, including all required fields.
  • Use your official affiliation email address rather than gmail or some other generic email address.

UAS data in this tier are made available for analysis only in the LINKAGE remote access Enclave, administered by UAS and the National Institute for Aging (NIA) Data Linkage Program. These data include coded UAS survey data linked with external program data from restricted sources such as SSA, CMS, or NDI. Also included in this tier are UAS coded survey data that include indirect or direct identifiers such as social media “handles” or data; occupation codes at levels 2 or 3, and location identifiers.
