Routing for UAS337

We are starting a new study, Air Quality in your Daily Life, and are looking for people who might be interested in wearing a pollution monitor in their daily life. The monitor is the size of a small cell phone, and you can clip it to your belt, clothing, or the outside of your bag. The device monitors levels of dust, pollen, soot and mold, as well as other pollutants such as car exhaust. If you are interested in participating, we will send you a pollution monitoring device. You will be asked to download an app on your smart phone, keep the pollution monitor with you throughout the day, and answer surveys about your activities once a month. Click next to learn more about the project and to decide whether or not you are interested in participating.

We are interested in this study because we are wanting to gain a better understanding how air quality impacts the health and well-being of people across the country.

For this project, you will wear an Atmotube pollution device (similar in size and shape to a cell phone), and answer questions each month. You will receive $10/month for keeping the device charged and active and for answering one short survey per month.

Click "Next" to learn more.
ct003_intro
If you agree to participate in Air Quality in your Daily Life, you will receive an Atmotube Pollution Monitor device. These are new devices and you will be one of the first study members to use it. Please read the description of the project below. You can read more about the Atmotube device here. We will ask you if you are interested in participating in the project after you have read through what is expected of you.

1. Download the Atmotube Application on your smart phone.
We will send you a user guide with instructions how to download the free Atmotube app and set it up with your device. The app will give you interesting information about the air quality in your home and environment if you are interested in learning about it. But you are not required to do anything in the app other than connect your device and keep the device syncing with the air quality data.

2. Wear your Atmotube Pollution monitor each day.
Wear the device on your belt loop or attach it to your bag. When you are home you need to keep it near you. You cannot wear it swimming or in the shower, as it is not waterproof, and you will need to keep it out of the rain or snow.

3. Charge your Atmotube once a week.
The device will come with a charging cable and we will include a power adapter so it will be easy to plug it in for a few hours each week.

4. Fill out a brief three-minute survey online at the end of each month.

5. At the end of the project, send the device back to us using the envelope and mailing label we have provided.

Frequently asked questions

How much time does it require? Very little. As it becomes routine, all you will need to do is make sure it is near you or on your person and to charge it once a week.

Compensation: Earn a total of $10 each month if your device is continuously measuring air quality and you are completing the short monthly survey.

Please click "Next" when you are done reading about our Air Quality in your Daily Life project and are ready to make a decision to participate or not to participate.

Now that you have read about what is required for the Air Quality in Daily Life Study, please let us know if you are interested in participating.

If you say yes, we will notify you by email to confirm your mailing address and send you the device and a user guide.

At that time, you can still say yes or no, or ask to be rescheduled.

Thank you for your willingness to consider participating in our study! Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

How does it work? If you decide to join this study and are selected to participate we will contact you by email. We will verify your address and check to make sure your phone can download the app. If you are able to participate, we will send you a package that includes the Atmotube Pollution monitor, a charging cable and power cube, and a guide that will explain in detail what to do.

What exactly does the pollution monitor do? The device has an input valve which draws air over its sensors. It then reports back on particulates, humidity, temperature, and other air quality measures in your environment. It will be interesting for you to see how your air quality changes from outside to inside, or when you are near a fireplace or cooking stove for instance.

If you were to lose the device or it was stolen, there is nothing that would connect the information recorded in the device to you personally. It is completely safe, and most users find that it is comfortable to wear and keep near them.

The smartphone app: Android users download the app from the Google Play Store. IPhone users download the app from the Apple store.

Time commitment: Responding to the monthly survey will take about three minutes. Charging the device at night each week will ensure it is ready for you in the morning.

If you have any other questions about the study before you decide, you can give us a call at 855-872-8673 or email us at uashelp@usc.edu.
