WELCOME TO THE UNDERSTANDING AMERICA STUDY MONTHLY SURVEYS DATA PAGE

This page houses two longitudinal datasets related to repeated surveys conducted monthly, at different points in time, in the UAS.

Monthly Panel Survey Dataset (October 2023 to Present)
The UAS’s Monthly Panel Survey series was fielded at the start of every month among all UAS participants beginning in October 2023 and is ongoing. All active panel members are invited each month to complete a survey which asks about issues and life events that happened in the previous calendar month.

Specifically, participants indicate if they experienced life events in the areas of employment, health, loss and finances in the prior month. They also provide self-assessments of health, life satisfaction, pain, and stress as well as answers to three PROMIS® mental health measures for Anger, Positive Affect, and Meaning and Purpose. For one year (October 2023-October 2024), a split sample of panel members answered questions about food security administered with recall periods of either 30 days or one year.

The Monthly Panel Survey Dataset merges and organizes the data from the ongoing Monthly Panel Surveys. The dataset is organized as a panel. Each record represents the responses of an individual to a given wave. More information about the included surveys and dataset variables are provided in the Monthly Panel Survey Dataset Description.

Older Ages Monthly Events Survey Dataset (June 2019 -September 2023)
The UAS’s Older Ages Monthly Events Survey series was fielded at the start of each month among UAS participants aged 50 or older, from June 2019 through September 2023. Eligible panel members in each survey were invited to fill out surveys asking about issues and life events that happened in the previous calendar month.

Specifically, participants indicated if they had experienced a series of positive and negative life events, provided self-assessments of health, life satisfaction and pain, as well as hours worked, earnings, and medical expenditures during the previous month.

The Older Ages Monthly Event Survey Dataset merges and organizes the data from the fifty-two Older Ages Monthly Events surveys. The dataset is organized as a panel. Each record represents the responses of an individual to a given wave. More information about the included surveys and dataset variables are provided in the UAS Older Ages Monthly Events Survey Dataset Description.
