General information

Question text: Congratulations, you are eligible to participate in an exciting new research study!

We are interested in learning more about the health of the American population, and in particular, in the best way to measure people’s activity levels.

We have an upcoming research project that focuses on this topic. We are testing two types of wrist-worn activity trackers and hope you would like to participate.

Q: If I decide to participate, what is involved, how much time will it take?

Participants in this study will wear one or both of the two activity tracker watches for a total of 16 days.
  • On Day 1 you will put on one of the two watches – we will assign which one.
  • On Day 8 you will put on the other watch and wear BOTH watches for 48 hours.
  • On Day 10 you will take off the first watch, and just wear the second one by itself, for another 7 days.
  • You will download and an app on your phone or tablet. We will give you the email address and password to use to sign in to the app. The app is required to sync data from one of the activity watches. When you are done with the project, you can delete the app.
  • Every evening you will fill out a short survey online at UAS, which takes about 5 minutes.
  • You can take off the watches now and then to clean them, or charge them, but we ask you to wear them at all other times for the full 16 days. If wearing one or both of them will interfere with work, social activities, or travel, you may want to decide not to participate.

When you return the two watches to us at the end of the study, you will earn $50 as our thank you for helping us with our research.

Q: What if I have my own activity watch like a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or Garmin etc.?

You can keep wearing your own smart watch, or any other type of activity tracker during the project so you can continue with your own fitness or tracking routines. There is a possibility that you could lose some data if you don’t sync to your own account the whole time. We will provide instructions for what to do if you want to keep tracking your activity with your own device during the study.

Q: What exactly will you be tracking for this project?

We collect information about activity levels only. For example if someone is running, walking, or sleeping. We will ask you to tell us what time zone you are in, but we do not your location or collect any other information about where you are or what you are doing.

Q: How many people are participating and how will you use the data you collect?

A total of about 60 UAS members will participate in this study. We will combine the information from all of the trackers worn by everyone. Our goal is to compare the information we got from the two different types of activity trackers with each other. We will also compare the information from the trackers with information you provide in the end of day surveys.

Would you be interested in participating in this important research study? If you say yes now, you can still decide whether or not you want to participate on the specific dates of the study when we send you the invitation.
